CAPE COD GATEWAY AIRPORT RECEIVES NEARLY $18 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING FROM THE CORONAVIRUS AID, RELIEF, AND ECONOMIC SECURITY (CARES) ACT GRANT

HYANNIS, MA (July 20, 2022) – The Cape Cod Gateway Airport (HYA) is announcing strategic projects that will be completed utilizing funding supplied through the CARES Act Grant:  the Mary Dunn Way Extension Project and the Airport Operations Remodel and Replacement T-Hangar Project.

These funds are being supplied to Airports throughout the country in response to the economic hardships suffered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The federal funding of $17,971,966 that we received in fiscal years 2021 and 2022,” stated Airport Manager, Katie Servis, “has enabled us to implement a number of our Business Plan goals, fund the majority of our capital improvements and operating costs, as well as rebuild the Airport reserves.”

Initially created in 2018, the Business Plan has already seen some completions, project launches and recurring item completions. The Plan has four major goals:

  1. Maximize Airport use by private and corporate individuals
  2. Create opportunities that maximize the Airport’s financial self-sufficiency
  3. Offer more air carrier opportunities to area residents, solidifying the future of air transportation at HYA
  4. Enhance the Airport image as a solid transportation entity and community resource

CARES Act dollars can be utilized for items not normally funded through typical federal grants the Airport receives from the government.  As such, the Airport will take this opportunity to specifically target Goal 1 with these dollars: assisting us in our progress toward increasing all civil aviation operations.

Extensive target market research and analysis went in to evaluating the Airport’s current operation to determine the most effective way to maximize its general aviation activity. It was determined that the following objectives would result in a positive outcome for both the Airport and the consumer:

  1.  Identify and create corporate aviation opportunities
  2.  Engage the recreational general aviation market
  3.  Provide “best in-region” aviation facilities and experience
  4.  Foster aviation education (aviation’s next generation)

The projects HYA has committed to will begin to address these objectives. Both projects will look at green developments wherever possible.

Project:  This extension will provide direct access to the East Ramp from Route 28 and all of its facilities and businesses.  This development is vital for aviation businesses to establish themselves at HYA, as well as for the replacement T-Hangar project to be completed.

Redevelopment will:

  • Rehabilitate the existing road
  • Extend the road further to the north
  • Rehabilitate and expand vehicle parking
  • Upgrade utilities:  water, sewer, electricity, phone, and cable
  • Add sidewalks
  • Add a bike lane
  • Include landscaping

Project:  These projects will greatly enhance our customer service experience by offering “first in class,” comfortable and inviting facilities and services to both recreational and corporate aircraft owners and flyers.  It will modify the current Airport Operations Office, which currently doubles as a pilot lounge and reception center, as well as replace one of our current T-Hangars.  In order to remain as green as possible, the T-Hangar project will also include an option for future rooftop solar power.

The Airport will continue to update the community on any construction disruptions and progress of the projects as they near completion.
